We met whenever I was about 6 years old at my house in Noman, Oklahoma. There were Pey ton, two brothers and her mom, and they just came over for like a movie night. And then, a few years lat er after that, we moved in together. And my dad start ed dating her mom.
When we had a Halloween par ty, I think it was in 2009, we just started playing in struments just for fun. And after that, we realised that we could actually be a band; actually write our own songs. It wasn’t as hard as we thought it wou ld be, and it wasn’t just for the people who knew we play instruments very well. Yeah, my dad always had instruments in our house, and I remember that I used to play music with my parents, just sing a song while they play guitar and pianos and whatev er. That night at a Halloween night in 2009, I was like actually playing my own instrument, and just having so much fun, just like making up songs at a spot. And, we should do this. And yeah, definit ely. And like, really do this.
4. What is the origin of the name ‘‘Skating Polly’’?
We came up with the name Skating Polly because we were starting this account on this art website, and I don’t know what art website was, but it was like a photography account where we can look up and load your files. Before the band, me and Peyton were really into photography, like that was our thi ng. Like Peyton will take a photo, and I would be like her subject. Then once we started a band, that just felt like an obvious name for us. We went thou gh a couple of band names through. I really liked the name Babonos. We were also Jump Loops for a little while, then we were just no. We should just use the photography account name. So that’s what ’s that.
Music is really a big part of my life. Even if I wasn’t pl aying it, I just listen to lots of music, going into sho ws, and it’s always a big part in my life ever since I can remember. I used to love co-edits because my pa rents play my favourite songs, and I danced to it. When I was in an elementary school, I was really into dance, like ballet and stuff. Yeah, even when I play, I love singing along, and dancing to, because I just love the melody so much. You hear a song you like, and that can just change things. Sometimes, you just realise ”gosh this is a serious moment.” Year, mu sic. I think it big for everyone. People take it so perso nally when people were like “oh you don’t like that band”, “oh what’s wrong with you? This band is amazi ng. Why can’t you see that?” Or like, “You like that band? The band sucks!” It’s just weird, because it has something that clicks with everybody. Some melo dy you just like, melody you don’t, some voice you like, some voices you don’t like. Playing music is also a big part of my life, because it’s one of my favourite things in general. And I like being able to create my own thing. My favorite kind of music – this is my music that I’m creating for my own pleasure, you know. It’s not just about making it. Any music is just a good way to express yourself for those who make music or who don’t make music. If you want someone to know… like someone asks you what’s your favouri te writer, you can tell your favorite writer, then they will know, at least a feel of who you are. I just think it’s really good, even with other people’s music. Just good to let people know what you like and how you are and stuff.
Different things and diff erent songs. I mean a lot of people think our music is angry or something. Some of its are angry, but some of its like bloody, and some of its just almost funny. It’s just a feeling prevailing in my head. A lot of my music are serious and personal. I try to make it a little bit fun where everyone can connect. Even in an angry song about someone who pissed me off, I want to be like… people can dance to it, feel it. And some of them, I don’t even know what I’m writing about; kind of a feeling that is going thr ough, even though I don’t exactly know what the su bject of this song is. Sometimes, I completely just write a song on my feeling. When I’m writing a song, I don’t really know what I’m trying to say. After I’ve written, I’m like that’s what I was gonna say. Usually that stuff is really important to me. “Oh, I like a pizza in SevenEleven.” – that kind of stuff is really important to me. Stuff that makes me happy. When I do know what I’m writing about, I write abo ut stuff that I have a strong feeling for it. That’s why I’m writing about it. Even when people don’t know what the song is about, I try to, whatever my song is about, take that into a song and give that feeling to other people. Whenever I write an angry song, it’s not really like I’m such an angry person. It’s almost like I’m taking that anger that whatever situation, place, and people that make me feel, and you know that’s how you go through it, writing abo ut it. Even if I don’t know exactly what is making me angry, I just write a song that’s just nonsense. Nonsense lyrics, but that’s how I’m getting through it.
I usu ally just start with playing a guitar. It takes me for ever. I jut play cords, then I work on melody. And I always do lyrics last, because lyrics is the hardest part definitely. A melody and guitar part come pret ty quickly, but then after that lyrics, probably it tak es a couple of days at the shortest, and a few wee ks at the longest. That’s basically for me. It’s really hard to explain. Year, different ways, and it kind of depends on what instrument I’m playing with. I alw ays start writing song with a guitar, and never fini sh because I’m not as good as her, so what’s the point! I just go write a song on my base and my piano, but you know, usually I start with some sort of riff and I just put vocal on part of that. Sometime just keep saying things until I find out what I like and lyrics, to try building a story. Sometimes, I com pletely won’t worry about lyrics and just work on melody. And, I’m just like “This is good, and this part needs a verse. I need a chorus, and maybe I do n’t wanna be this way…”. I try to make my songs di fferent, so that it doesn’t sound too similar from the last song, structurally or just a melody. And then, lyrics are always different, you know. My own experiences, but I try to make it more abstra ct, so that people won’t know everything about my life. I just try writing things that I exactly don’t know what I’m talking about. People ask me “What ”s this about?”. “Well this is about blur blur blur”, and people are like, “so this didn’t happen to you?” and I’m like “No, it might have…” It’s just kind of abstract, and I just do with what sounds good. And then, I love working backwards. That’s my favorite thing to do, That’s why I always want Kelli when I write a song. So, I’m like, “Just stay here, stay here, and let me figure this out.” And I’m like, “Don ’t play that. Don’t play that, or sing this!” And she ’s like, “Just chill!” reminding me to breath. Yeah, Peyton always writes well, and I’m always trying, because I’m always like, “Does this sound good? Are you sure it sounds good?”.
I really like Michael Jackson. We also had this movie of Nirvana, Beastie Boys music video, a movie of Michael Jackson, and a movie of Eminem. I liked all of them quite a lot actual ly. It’s all good music to dance to. So, I really liked Mi chael Jackson, and when I was two, I loved the song Thriller. I just really loved the beat and loved dancing to it. And the first song I was obsessed with was, Eve ryone Knows Leonard Cohen. It was total drug of a song. The lyrics was so depressing, but to me, it was the funniest thing in the world. And I would have my parents play over and over. It’s really a long song, too, so they kind of get sick of it. But, I really liked White Stripes a lot. I love their album “Elephant” and the song “In Cold, Cold Night” in that album. And Be atles, everyone loves Beatles. I remember being in a kindergarten, there was this song that was Eight Days A Week, but I changed the lyrics, but my frie nd and teacher were like, “This is rip-off. You can’t do.” And by fifth grade, everyone knew about Beatles, and I was annoyed by it. I was like I knew about the fi rst! I always liked Sex Pistoles.
9. Do you have favorite band now?
All time favourite would have to be Beatles, but then, Nirvana. Both are actually really big bands. Everything is really re ally good song and melody, that’s why they are real ly big. I love Beatles. Elliot Smith is my favourite human being, but he is not technically a band, he’s a song writer. Beatles, it was until recently that I realised I really appreciate it. We watched the Beat les Trilogy, which were like a 7-disc set of the mem bers telling their stories. And they take John Lenon ’s interview, and it’s really really good. And you just appreciate every single Beatle. It used to be John Lenon who is my favourite Beatle. Easy. But now I don’t know. They are all amazing. They wouldn’t be Beatles without each other. Same as me. I always li ked the Beatles, then watched the movie. I couldn’t believe why it took me so much to realise how gre at they are.
10. Do you like cloth es and where do you buy clothes?
Oh I really love cl othes. Most of the time, I buy at stores, but I also shop at Target sometimes or just other stores, but in a mall. I love going in stores and finding really weird stuff, also really cute dresses. I love dresses; I have so many dresses. I love them all. Shopping for clothes; I don’t really like shopping that much. Most of the time, it’s books, clothes and records, and those are the three things I need to buy. I wear an oversized shirt and a cargo short a lot. Now I’m pretty attached to a lot of my clothes. I love vinta ge thing and thrift stores. Even if it’s a thing I fou nd at Walmart, I just love getting deals on clothes. If I can get clothes for free, I never give away those clothes, even if they don’t fit me, I’m like “Oh, they mean something though.” And all other clothes that I ripped, I would never fixed them, because I’m too lazy, and I never think of them until I want to wear them again. And I just leave them forever and don’t get rid of. So, I really really like style. And sty le is different from fashion, you know. All my favour ite bands have really really good style. It’s okay to care about clothes.
11. What do you think about Japan?
I would love to go to Japan. That sounds really exciting and fun, and everything I’ve seen about it gives me “Oh, someday I wish we go there. We should totally go there.” Hopefully we’ ll and play there. I bet we will eventually, but I don’t know when, but we probably will. Yeah, I think it’s re ally cool, and I love to go there.
I have lots of dreams, yeah. It’s my dream to play with the band I like and go ot her countries. Yeah, and they are all coming true. I want my dreams be like “I wanna meet so and so”. If I’m getting into someone’s music, I really want to meet them. If I meet them, and they’re weirdos, then I would become more obsessed with them. I re ally wanted to meet this band, and we’re gonna meet them tomorrow. So, That’s really exciting. And I just wanna play with a lot of bands. Even if it’s one show, it will be cool if there are other bands that I like. And I wouldn’t try competing with them, you know. Because there are so many bands I just love way more than my own music. I would be real ly really nervous, but I will be happy if they want me to play with them. And I just wanna a tour more. I love touring. I guess my dream would be always being Skating Polly, always put out a record and be on tour. Also, gradually get bigger, so we can actua lly look after Skating Polly. All these people that I want to play with, we’d have to play weird songs out of our music catalogue to fit with them, but I would still love to play. Even if our music didn’t go together, I just love their music so much, so that I wouldn’t mind.
